Keeping the Oktoberfest Tradition Alive in Grand Rapids

The GRACF decided that they would not be able to hold their Oktoberfest celebration this year. :-(.  We discussed this at the club leadership, and decided to take action to keep the tradition alive.  So…

We are planning an Oktoberfest event for Saturday, September 23rd from 4-7pm in the parking lot of the soon to open Klockow Brewing Company.  They have graciously allowed us to use their parking lot.  They won’t be open yet, and won’t have beer to serve, but Andy and Tasha are gracious hosts.

We need your help to keep Oktoberfest alive in Grand Rapids. We don’t know how big will turn out, but whether it’s 50 or 250 folks that show , we plan to have fun anyway.

The club will provide the following:

  • Tasting cups
  • Rinse pails and water
  • Wrist bands
  • Music
  • Our Banner
  • and we’re working on advertising on social media, signage, a grill for members to use

We’re also working on getting a food truck to show up, and if we can show enough people responding on Facebook, it may help.

How can you help?

  1.  Promote our event on Facebook and twitter.  I have link to the Facebook event here:
  2. Respond to our survey (google form) on whether or not you can attend, help out, provide beer, etc.

Thanks, have a home brew.

Homebrew Sampling X 2

Brew Folks,

We have two samplings coming up next week, and could use some assistance.  Both are on Thursday August 24th.  One runs from 3:00 – 7:00, the other from 5:00 – 6:00.  Please review the information here, and use the links to Doodle polls to indicate if you can participate.  Please use the note function in the poll to indicate if you can be there, or just could provide a six pack or so of beer.

The North Central Research and Outreach Center (U of M) hosts an annual Visitor’s Day on the ICC campus.  We began working with them last year, and served samples as tour groups showed up at our table.  Tour groups will arrive with questions on brewing, ingredients, styles – the typical questions we get while serving samples.  We need two people to staff this sampling, either staying the full four hours, or just working for two.  The poll lets you select which.  Set up would begin at 2 PM.  There’s water, snacks and a dinner ticket for any brewers who participate.

The Eldercircle Harvest Dinner is an annual event that we have supported since its inception.  There’s a one-hour timeframe for serving samples beginning at 5:00, then the dinner begins at 6:00.  It will be held at the Luney Berries Strawberry Farm in Cohasset, 41237 County Rd 63.  Set up will need to begin about 4:00.  There are dinner tickets for a set number of brewers.  Stay for the auction, it’s a riot!

The Deer River BBQ and Brewfest is just a few days away, Saturday July 15!  We need YOU to step up and enter some beer for competition, and serve some samples to the public.  It’s easy, there are prizes, and since this is a BJCP sanctioned competition, the judges’ notes on your beers will be mailed to you afterward.  It is one of the best ways to get quality feedback on your beer.

As of 7/11/17 there are just five homebrewers confirmed as competing.  This happens every year – people wait until the last minute to commit.  Please consider any role – entering beer for completion, serving beer to the public, judging beer, sharing beer among homebrewers and eating great BBQ!  Please contact Mike Twite ASAP to get your beers registered.  (218) 259-3795, or  Please let Mike know as soon as you can, because the later entries come in, the harder it is to organize and run the competition.

There are 16 BBQ teams entered so far, so there should be some great eating!  The event will be in a new location, on HWY 2 in Deer River, so we expect it to be the biggest yet.

The Deer River BBQ and Brewfest is an annual community event, run through the Deer River Chamber of Commerce.
