It’s that time of year again, the Great Northern Brew Ha Ha is just around the corner, February 9-11.
As in the past, they’ll be holding a judging session Thursday evening February 9, at Lake Superior Brewing, and the rest of the event beginning Friday February 10 at the Holiday Inn Duluth.
The banquet will also be held at the Holiday Inn and be Mead themed, with speakers Jon Hamilton from White Winter Winery and Susan Ruud from Prairie Rose Meadery.
Hotel rooms are available at the Holiday Inn at the event rate but will only be held until January 10, so book your rooms early by calling 218-722-1202 and letting them know you’re with the Brew Ha Ha, or, you can book online. When booking use the group code “NAS.” (Look for the group code field when you search for rooms).
Entry registration opens January 6. Once again they’ll be collecting entries at the Minnesota Mashout for all those who participate in this competition and wish to drop off entries at Summit. To enter beers, register to judge or steward or purchase banquet tickets, please use this link http://www.northernalestars.net/events.html
Looking forward to seeing everyone. Happy New Year!
Our club has been quite active this year in supporting local charity events. Here’s a quick recap:
- March– Annual Jaycees Home, Sport and Travel Show
- May– Big Brew at Zorbaz. This was not a charity event, but a part of our public education mission
- May– Taste of Itasca tasting for Bridges Mentoring
- July– Deer River BarBQue and Brew Fest
- August– NCROC Visitors Day
- August– Itasca County Fair
- September– ElderCircle Harvest Dinner
- September– Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation Oktimberfest
Special thanks to all that were able to help out and contribute beer. Beer lovers in our community appreciate it!
We had committed to a couple of other events that were canceled by their organizers. It looks like our calendar is clear for the rest of this year, so now we’ll have some time to get together at club meetings.
We’ll post meeting notices here, so sign up on our home page to get notified.
Relax and Have a Homebrew!
It’s that time of the year again, and we’re looking for some members to help out by bringing beer and/or serving. This is a really fun event, with lots of people who enjoy tasting and talking about our beers. We get in free, and get fed too! What a perfect evening. Let Chad or Steve know if you can help out. Post a comment below if that works for you too.

German-style brews exclusively from Minnesota will be featured at Oktimberfest. As craft and micro-breweries explode in popularity here in Minnesota, varieties of Oktoberfest, Marzen, Pilsner and Lager, all made in Minnesota, will showcase our state’s brewing talent.
When it comes to local brewing talent, the Boreal Brewers, our local home-brew club, will be showcasing their latest creations too. Their unique brews, always a popular part of the event, will be sampled throughout the evening as the fire crackles and the polka music fills the night air.
See you there!
The University of Minnesota’s North Central Research & Outreach Center will be hosting their annual Visitors Day event on August 25th, and they have invited us back to talk about hops in brewing at their hops research station in Grand Rapids. We were there last year, and enjoyed sharing our knowledge with visitors.
This year will be even better because we get to share our beer with visitors!
Steve brewed a beer featuring the hops that they grow on site, and Chad will offer up a bit of the Brhubarb Pale Ale.
The event starts at 3pm and runs until 6pm. Feel free to join us if you are interested.
